Gap Fillers - MH&W Thermal Products

Gap Fillers

are thicker and softer materials that can bridge larger distances between two surfaces based on surface waviness, tolerances, structures, etc.. As a general rule a soft gap filler should not be compressed by more than 1/3 of its thickness to avoid bleeding.

  • The thermal conductivity ranges from 1.0 to 6.0 W/mK. Since the thickness is higher than for standard films the resulting thermal resistance is also higher.
  • Typical thickness range for gap filler is between 0.5 mm and 6 mm. This allows for bridging large gaps.
  • For bridging larger surface differences the materials are softer and more easy to compress. They are measured on the Shore 00 scale with values between 10 – 75 depending on the type. Driven by the ceramic fillers, higher thermal conductivity leads to a harder material.
  • They show good electrical isolation performance in the 2 – 14 kV/mm  dielectric breakdown voltage range.
Typical application areas for Gap Fillers are:

✓ RAM modules
✓ Heat pipe solutions
✓ Automotive engines
✓ Control units
✓ Irregular shaped components
